Chapter Twenty Seven

When Ray and Leila got home, Devon’s car was out front and Leila knew Devon was ready to go off. “What’s this kid’s address,” Devon demanded. “I’m going to get my child,” he barked.

“Devon, calm down and stop yelling,” Leila said, trying not to yell.

“Lei, this is some bullshit and I have a right to go and get my daughter,” he said and his eyes welled. He was terrified and wasn’t ready for his baby to be doing things he knew he had done at fifteen. She was his baby girl and he wasn’t going to leave it up to her to make the right decision.

“Ray, take Alicia inside please and let me have a moment with Devon,” Leila said and Ray nodded and invited Alicia inside. “Come on, Devon, let’s take a walk.”

“Leila, I don’t want to take a walk, I want to go and get Deja right now!”

“Pick her up and do what, Devon? Send her to her room? Slide her food under her door, go to every class she has or walk through the mall with her and her little chatty ass girlfriends to make sure she is not talking about sex, and so-called love and West? Deja is smart, Devon … we have talked to her, educated her and equipped her with all the instructions that we can for moments like this. Devon, like I told Ray, if not tonight, tomorrow, or next week or whenever, so if you want to go and scoop her up, I’ll tell you where she is, but if she doesn’t go through with it tonight, and she wants to, she will. Please, Devon, just give our baby the benefit and a little space. She is a good kid,” she said. Devon’s phone rang. He pulled it out and it was Deja. Devon answered quickly.

“D.J.,” he said, happy to hear her voice.

“Daddy, can you pick me up? I don’t want to be here. Kimberly’s mom isn’t here and it’s not as cool as I thought it would be,” she said and Devon could hear her voice shaking.

“Of course,” he said and he and Leila went inside and let Ray and Alicia know they were going to pick up Deja. When they pulled up, Deja was out in a flash and was surprised to see Leila with Devon.

“Mom, I didn’t know you’d be coming,” she said and shut the door.

“Well, we were all at the house recapping your party,” she said and winked at Devon.

“Well, since you’re both here, I can talk to you both,” she said and put her head down.

“What is it, baby? You know you can talk to us about anything,” Devon said.

“I know,” she said and paused sniffling.

“What’s wrong, sweetheart?” Leila asked turning around in her seat and Devon looked to see where he could pull over.

“He dumped me, ma,” she said and cried. “He called me a little girl and told me to call him when I was ready to be a woman,” she cried. Devon jaws flared.
